Let’s talk overwhelm.
Overwhelm is a struggle that has popped up countless times in coaching sessions with clients.
What I’m hearing is this: “I feel so overwhelmed. I’m unclear about where I’m going. I’m so confused and it’s too much. I know I need to take action in my business, but I don’t do it because I’m paralyzed.“
Overwhelm is a completely normal response to forging a new path and doing something you’ve never done before.
When you feel the call to up level your life or business or to chase down big dreams and goals that you previously deemed impossible, overwhelm occurs… and it’s designed to completely stop you in your tracks.
The score?
You: 0
Your survival self: 1
The survival self uses overwhelm as a tool to keep you where you are.
When you’re unclear, confused, or stressed, you STOP taking action, which is exactly what it wants. The survival self’s job is to protect you from the unknown. It’s designed to keep you safe. Therefore, we can’t really blame it. It’s just doing its job.
The challenge occurs when you let the survival self keep you stuck. When you let overwhelm take the wheel, it becomes impossible to accomplish your dreams and make the world a better place with your unique gifts, talents, and skills. This is good for the survival self, but bad for you and the people who need your magic.
If you’re currently plagued by overwhelm, it’s time to release yourself from the clutches of fear.
One of the best ways to do this is by changing your state.
You will not be able to gain clarity or think of new, out-of-the-box, creative solutions to achieve your dreams if you’re in a state of overwhelm.
Changing your state means taking “shocking” action to move into a higher vibration.
*Please note: I’m not talking about action that is traumatizing. I’m talking about action that will get your blood flowing and your emotions moving.
Actions include:
⚡️ Watching something hilarious.
⚡️ Moving your body via dance or an intense workout.
⚡️ Taking a cold shower or jumping into a cold body of water.
⚡️ Playing a competitive game.
⚡️ Giving back by helping someone who is struggling more than you.
⚡️ Asking for heart-felt acknowledgement from a loved one.
After changing your state, the clouds will part and you can create a game plan that will courageously move you in the direction of your dreams.
When creating your game plan, remember to break down big actions into small steps. Trying to take actions that are too big or too scary will put you right back into a state of overwhelm.
To avoid this, make sure you’re breaking down action steps into teeny tiny baby steps. As you check off the baby steps, you’ll be surprised by the momentum you gain. Eventually, you’ll be able to take bigger swings and make bolder moves without moving into overwhelm. For now, start with where you are.
For example, if your goal is to sign one new client this month, maybe the first tiny baby step is to make a list of people in your network whom you feel inspired by as opposed to sending ten email invitations to work with you. Or maybe, your tiny step is to “research networking events in the local area” instead of “attend five networking events.”
