When I was a little girl, I believed in magic.
I believed in it so much, I thought I was a witch.
I made potions from berries that grew wild in the woods. I cast love spells out of poems and flowers. I even made myself a silver wand and told my friends at school that they were witches too.
As I grew up and my fairy tale faded, I stopped believing I was a witch, but I never stopped believing in magic.
In fact, magic has only become MORE REAL over time.
In 2011, I was shocked to learn that a week before graduating, I was the Valedictorian of my college class. Thank you, Universe.
In 2013, I drove around a sunny bend in Oregon as goosebumps flecked my arms. I had been on the road for three weeks and I could not believe this was my life. THIS, I thought, was magic. Thank you, Universe.
In 2015, over 200 people signed up for my first free fitness challenge. SERIOUSLY?! Thank you, Universe.
In 2016, I soaked in a Balinese bath tub, reading Eat, Pray, Love, and crying tears of joy because somehow, I had come to LIVE the story that changed my life. Thank you, Universe.
Even now, when things start to go well and miracles seemingly occur out of nowhere, I tend to talk about them like they’re magic—as if this magic is occurring outside of me, beyond my control—as if it’s something that’s happening TO me.
In truth, MAGIC COMES THROUGH ME.
And when my fairy tale faded all of those decades ago, so too did the KNOWING that I’m the one who wields it.
Rather than berries, I now make potions from deciding.
Rather than poems, I now cast spells with my devotion.
Rather than a wand, I now challenge alchemy through action.
It struck me yesterday why “manifesting” as a principle and a word stopped feeling good to me so long ago. Manifesting presumes that when you feel and behave a certain way, the Universe will bless and bestow miracles upon you {or it won’t}.
How quickly we forget that we are not at cause—we are at Creation.
